What little we know about Zomaz can be gleaned from the Chronicles of Zomaz, a highly symbolic and stylised account of working class life in post-industrial Sheffield. It is not just an account of everyday life of ordinary Northern anarchists. It is in a fact a manifesto for the liberation of twentyfirst century Britain from the yoke of stupidity.
There is much speculation as to who Zomaz actually is. It has been rumoured that he is in fact based on the leader of a hardcore Sheffield anarchist group known as the Unweshed. But the generally accepted theory is that Zomaz is an anagram of Zozam - the nineteenth century Bolivian revolutionary who was famously martyred in La Paz.
Reject materialism and consumerism. Life is a path to enlightenment not material enrichment. Shoplifting is a metaphor for the rejection of capitalism. Aaron the shoplifting vegan monkey symbolises the nobler aspects of human nature. And the choice of a monkey to represent this, is intended to describe the low regard society has for higher human nature. Eat shit and die, is more than an obscenity to hurl at enemies. Read it as,Eat, Shit, and Die and it succinctly encapsulates the capitalist life-cycle.
Zomaz is an intellectual and an activist, and he is unashamedly working class. Or is he? The values of the underclass and the petty beourgoisie merge together in unweshed political theory. The celebration of poverty is a means for the underclass to elevate themselves to the rank of middle-class lowlife.
Free your mind and your arse will follow. The promotion of stupidity is the most effective weapon of oppression ever produced. Bad is good. Good is bad. Crap is irony. Ignorance is knowledge. Wisdom is folly. Standing on the shoulders of pygmies we boldly start the twenty-first century.
Let us hope that Zomaz is successful.
